CASCADE

This is from Sarah’s personal collection – Sarah has spent the last few years studying with Kimberly Halter from the Bonsai Academy.  Sarah goes over to the Academy at least once a month but at times it can be every weekend.  Sarah has a passion that runs deep through her veins when it comes to Bonsai.  Her trainer Kimberly travels to Japan to continue her learning of this ancient art.  Sarah has made the tough decision to pass on her tree to the next Bonsai Lover. The Bonsai is a Semi Cascade (Hen-kengai) this style shows a tree that leans to one side and has a tail that goes beyond the top lip of the pot but doesn’t exceed the bottom lip of the pot. A Semi-Cascade is most often planted in a deeper square or hexagonal pot but is not restricted to this type of pot.  This is one of the 5 styles of Bonsai.   This Cascade bonsai is a Juniper tree which is from the cypress family. They are evergreen coniferous trees or shrubs, which are very popular for Bonsai. Junipers can have two types of foliage, needle-like, and scale-like foliage.  This Juniper is the needle-like foliage.   Place Cascade in an outdoor environment, in a bright location with lots of sunlight.  Often a covered deck or patio that still gets that sun but where you can appreciate the beauty on a daily basis. Some species change their foliage colour during frosty periods to a purplish brown which is a part of their internal frost protection mechanism. Don’t worry they will turn green again in spring. Sarah is available to continue the maintenance of this Semi Cascade Juniper tree.
